Abstract

The magnetospheric convection is the fundamental process in which all global magnetospheric phenomena like a substorm occur.  The convection process has been widely explained with Dungey convection model [1961].  On the other hand, we developed a global MHD simulation which reproduces the magnetospheric process precisely.  Then, it is very surprising that the Dungey convection model is not reviewed by using the MHD simulation except Tanaka [2007]. I point out three defects of the Dungey model.  The first defect is that the Dungey convection model does not consider plasma pressure.  The second one is that the Dungey convection model does not consider the three-dimensional topology of the magnetic field merging in the dayside magnetopause.  The last one is that the Dungey convection model is a cartoon physics without quantitative evaluations of physical principle.  I will present mainly the second topic in this lecture.
