Title : Age of the lunar South Pole-Aitken basin

Abstract :
The lunar farside South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin is the oldest and largest impact basin on the Moon.  However, the age of the basin is unknown.  Determining its age would help determine the ages of all of the Moon's subsequent basins.  A sample return mission to date the basin has been a high priority for almost 20 years, as identified by the US National Academies, and numerous proposals to NASA's mission programs.  Here I present evidence that the age of the SPA basin can be fairly well established as 4.23 billion years old, based on Apollo sample 76535, Dhofar meteorite 489, and the statistics of craters on its surface.
