Title : Plasma Composition in Steady Flows and Transient Events

Abstract :
The elemental composition of the solar wind can be used to trace the flow back to its origin in various solar structures. If the plasma is not in ionization equilibrium, its ionization
state contains information about the thermal history of the plasma, and hence about its heating rating and energy budget. We discuss the methods for modeling non-equilibrium ionization and present examples from the solar wind and solar flares.

Title : Sungrazing Comets as Probes of the Solar Corona and Pickup Ions

Abstract :
Images or spectra of the solar corona obtained from Earth provide only line-of-sight integrals of the temperature, density and composition of the coronal plasma, and therefore only average physical parameters. A probe measures the physical quantities at each point along its trajectory. Solar Probe Plus and Solar Orbiter will be probe the corona beyond 10 solar radii. Sungrazing comets can act as less precise probes of the magnetic field, density, temperature and flow speed of the corona at heights as small as 0.3 solar radii above the surface.
