Title : Role of Zonal Flows in Fusion Plasma Confinement

Abstract :
Progress on theoretical research on zonal flows made in the past two decades is reviewed as a prime example of synergism out of theory-experiment collaboration. This led to high impact results and paradigm shift from linear eigenmode-based turbulence theory to self-organized turbulence regulated by zonal flows. This is a rare case of theory-simulation leading experimental progress in tokamak confinement research. Zonal flows play crucial roles in determining turbulent transport rate and scalings with respect to key parameters such as machine size and collisionality. If time allows, recent research progress on unsolved problems such as isotopic dependence of confinement and dependence of H-mode transition condition on the divertor X-point location with respect to the ion grad-B direction will be mentioned as well.
