Title : Simulations of Substorm Electron Injections and ELF/VLF Whistler Mode Emissions

Abstract :
Ground stations in Antarctica may play a crucial role in understanding some properties of substorm injections. In particular, increases of the ELF/VLF signals measured at the Antarctic stations may represent the whistler waves generated by the energetic electrons that were injected during substorms and arrive at the magnetic field lines connected to the ground stations. In this talk, I will present a selective set of the data and a set of model calculations. The VLF data were gathered from the Antarctic stations as part of the Polar Experiment Network for Geospace Upper-atmosphere Investigations (PENGUIn) project. The modeling ranges from a simple one based on analytic expressions of the drift rate to a full three dimensional test particle simulation along with a linear theory for whistler wave emissions. Both capabilities and shortcomings of these models will be demonstrated and discussed in relation to their diagnostic uses for deriving the properties of substorm injections.
