Title : Electron Acceleration and Heating in Magnetic Reconnection
Abstract : The electron acceleration/heating during magnetic reconnection in collisionless plasmas is determined by the in-plane electrostatic electric field, the out-of-plane magnetic field and the parallel electric field. The electric and magnetic field structures depend on the guide magnetic field strength. Based on the particle-in-cell simulation results, we will discuss the kinetic physics about (1) how electric and magnetic fields ae formed, (2) how electrons are accelerated in the reconnection current layer and around the separatrix region, (3) why electrons have a flat-top parallel velocity distribution in the upstream just outside the reconnection region as observed in the magnetotail, and (4) why the electron outflow velocity from the reconnection region reaches super-Alfvenic speed. Applications of the magnetic reconnection kinetic physics to the understanding of space observations will also be discussed.
