Title : Limitation of energetic ring current ion spectra

Abstract : We address the problem of finding the limiting energetic ring-current ion spectrum resulting from electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC)-wave-ion interactions. We solve the problem in a relativistic regime, without assuming a form for the particle energy distribution. This problem has been a long- standing challenge in space physics. The limiting differential flux is determined by a steady-state marginal stability criterion in which a convective wave gain condition is applied over all frequencies for which wave growth occurs. This condition produces an integral equation for the trapped flux. We find that in the relativistic regime the limiting energy spectrum varies asymptotically as 1/E, for large ion energy E. We compare the numerical solutions for the limiting spectra with measured energetic planetary ion spectra.
