Title : Slow Magnetoacoustic Waves in Solar Coronal Loops

Abstract :
Slow magnetoacoustic waves are often observed in plasma loops in the solar corona with spectroscopic and imaging instruments.
Both propagating and standing waves are confidently detected, with the typical periods from a few to several minutes. The periods of propagating waves are usually determined by the parameters of the plasma at the chromospheric level, in particular the acoustic cutoff frequency. The period of standing slow waves, also often referred to as ¡°SUMER¡± oscillations, is determined by the length of the oscillating loop and the plasma temperature. Both standing and propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves appear in decaying and wave train regimes. The key element of the theoretical modelling of slow magnetoacoustic waves in the corona is the accounting for the thermodynamical effects, such as thermal conduction, misbalance of the radiative losses and heating, and finite plasma beta. I will present results of recent statistical analysis of slow magnetoacoustic oscillations observed in the corona, in particular the evidence of nonlinear effects and the linear scaling of the damping time with the oscillation period, and also advances in theoretical modelling of these waves.
